and I tried DL'ing a driver for an OfficeJet. It's not working atm. Does it ever work, or is this one of those sites that never works properly?

Not sure where you were trying to download from, but if you're looking for a driver for an HP OfficeJet Printer/Fax/Scanner, best bet is always the manufacturer first.
