I have a dual boot on an 8gig drive, Linux is installed onto a 857mb partition, with a 512 swap partition.(The other 6.6 gigs is used by windows, with 900mb free) Its only used for chatting, and some dos games, though I do have a geforce 3 in it, which is nice for open gl screensavers. How small of swap space can I get away with?

It has 512 of physical Ram

I run 512 RAM and don't even use a swap. I think my machine is noticably faster since I eliminated my swap partition. If you are afraid to try not having one, why not create it, then you can disable it after you get up and running to see. If it doesn't work out, then enable the swap space.
