X-com games under XP

I reallyu enjoy playing the X-COM series, but alas, I have XP now. Can anyone give me an idea of how to run these games under XP. I keep getting an error in the system config during loading of the program. It says that Apocalypse requires a 20/20 files/buffers config while XP is set at 40/0. I have tried changing config.sys using sysedit but keeps defaulting to 40/0. Any advice would be appreciated.
