ive been having some trouble with my drivers not installing properly, and i think its being caused by bad settings being left in the registry.
so, is there a way to completly reset the driver configuration?
i seem to recall reading somewhere that there is some way to do this easily.
i dont remember what it was though.

There are two ways:
a) Hardware profiles (I assume you made a copy of last one first). See System control panel
b) Last Known Good Configuration when you boot up.

Irrespective of whatever else you do, it might be sensible to go into your System BIOS and enable Reset Configuration Data. Allow the machine to then boot into Windows. As it does so, it'll re-detect your various hardware components and, where appropriate, reinstall their drivers. The RCD setting in the BIOS then puts itself back to its original state.
