Hey guys hoping you can help me here...

When i try to boot up windows, it gets as far as the log in screen, i login but explorer doesnt load up, theres no errors appearing, i give it about 10 minutes.

I can do a ctrl-alt-del and get into the process bar to confirm explorer isnt loading.

I can also confirm explorer.exe is in c:\windows.

This occured when i used a program called The Cleaner to scan and remove some trojens (i think about 7 were found, 2 trojens, the rest adware and "browser" hijacks).

After that my computer went a lil insane :P

I am tempted to copy over explorer.exe from the windows CD and replace the one in C: just incase something messed up.

If anyone else has any other ideas pleeeeeeeease let me know, i'll be checking this in the morning smile

Thanks in advance.

Hey thanks - right now i am duel booting.

Yes taskmnger is loading, but i cant open any .exes from file/run so i cannot load the registory editor. Can i do this from my second OS? (XP as well).

Edit

I have also tried replacing the explorer.exe - made no difference, so i am guessing something has "hijacked" the shell from loading up, how could i fix this from my duel booted OS?

I really need to avoid reinstalling XP this time frown

Thanks

Try renaming Regedit.exe to Regedit.com and see if it loads now.

Well thats all kinda void, it never worked, i also did a File / Run "cmd" from the task manager to get into the prompt but again that never worked.

Not sure what else i can do here, i am dueling booting in (got a back up OS), if i could get into the registory for that installation on here that would be good....

Anymore ideas?

Wow.. you guys are SUPERB!!!

-- I followed your directions, and tips and all.. and I fixed this computer thatI was going to reload everything into.
I am so grateful with you, if you ever make it to Portland, OR I shall take you out for a spin in the city!

I had the error that is most common in this page, the one where windows cannot load anything but the girl.. I mean, not even .e.x.e. files..
thats so just so.. gosh.. almost ridiculous.

anyway, but the truth is that it wasnt working and I did what you said..
First made sure this:
My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler\
(Default) REG_SZ
{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

was the same on the machine that needed the fix
ALas! they were identical keys.

But then the EXE file on the same section I had to 'export' the branch and put it on a microdrive and then I deleted the branch on the broken machine, and replaced it with the one donated from the clean machine.

It worked like a charm!!!!
Specially the trick of using Command to make the regesit run, i could have not thought it myself.
Thank you again.

and as promised or requested, the clean reg info:
