ff7 need help with laptop

i installed ff7 on my laptop, i also installed the xp patch and ff7input patch
it did work,however when i get to the part where i pick my charictars name the config goes back to normal
i have managed to get the curser to the "select" option using the function button but i cant select it
Pleez help
