CPU always processing

Hey Guys,

My computer always seems to be running 1000 programs at once. But it's not. I say this because the CPU seems to always be "crunching", or doing some type of memory intensive work. This only happens when I am NOT using the computer, ie idle. For example, if I sit back and look at my computer for a second, eveything will seem fine - then the next second, I can hear all this noise coming from the computer like it is doing 1000 processes at once. My computer also gets very hot because of this! Also, as soon as I press a key, or move my mouse just a little, the processes stop! I am running XP, 512MB ram, 3.4 ghz... I have been on the phone w/ Dell (Inspiron) for about 2 hrs trying to get this resolved... so far nothing... any hints? I have also run a virus scan about 6 times (updated every time) and nothing...

Chris,

Have you check your system for Spyware? Ad-aware from www.lavasoft.de is an excellent free program that you can remove all Spyware from your system. It also has a button to update itself as new varients of Spyware are discovered. Install the program and update first, then run it. I suspect that is your issue. I even found Spyware on my new laptop before it was even hooked up to the Internet.

Check out Spybot... Adaware is good but in my opinion Spybot is better. It even has free updates!

I'd also recommend checking if your computer is set to scan for viruses if it idle. It may simply be that your computer is scanning itself.

Also open up Task Manager, Select the processes tab. Make sure no screensaver is turned on. Then don't use your computer for a while... When it starts happening again try to see what is using up your CPU cycles... hopefully you can find it...
If nothing is eating up CPU processing then something is doing stuff on your hard drive...
