Laptop - need to run XP or 2000 on it!

Hi

I have an intell pentium 400 mhz with 256 mb of ram

in the past i have had windows XP running on it

when i recently came to install xp OR 2000 on it it crashes when the blue installation screen apprars in the xp/2000 setup

any ideas why?? , i would really like to have xp or 2000 on my laptop

it doesnt give any error message it literally just hangs

It hangs when the text mode setup says now starting windows or just when that screen appears and is going to or has started to load files?!?

It seems that this is a memory problem, try to change memory.

sounds like memory to me. I would guess that it has at some point been upgraded (since most 400mhx notebooks did not come with 256mg) and maybe someone did not choose the exactly correct module.

try downloading the free memtest86, and let it run overnight. it catches a lot of errors.

or try and install it with the extra module removed if it has some integrated memory/2 modules (most do)

I had the same problem with a IBM notebook (P300/256MB)
After initiating Windows XP it hangs at 39 min left.
Solution?

I placed a xtra fan next to the notebook and restarted the
installation; then all worked fine.
I know its not a hightech solution but it worked for me.
Worth a try though!!

May want to see if a BIOS update is available, too... But it sounds like bad RAM to me, as well.
