When I copy large files from 1 win2k adv server to another, available memory drops to about 10MB free on both.
Most files are about 1GB each. It takes about 15-20 minutes to copy these from 1 server to another.
Here's the specs of both:
Dual PIII-1.13
1GB PC133
3Com 3c905b 10/100 (connected at 100)
300GB on an IDE RAID5 array (4x100WD JB drives)
P4-2.4GHz
1GB PC2700 DDR
Intel 10/100 onboard (connected at 100)
240GB on an IDE RAID0 array (2x120WD JB drives)
Both are Win2000 Adv Server with SP3.
They are connected on a corporate LAN by a Cisco switch.
** This also happens with a crossover cable also **
NICS have also been replaced/added to see if that was the issue. :x
Any reason for the slow copy times?

What kind of files are these? If they are DBs, are the files open or closed when copying.
Do you experience the same lag when copying the files locally to another partition or when backed up to a tape drive?

I assume you have all the latest drivers for you NICs. 3Com NICs can be picky and down right shady at times.

Another thing .... how are you copying n pasting the files? If you are using the GUI then you are using Core mode which transfers data in 4kb increments ... if you use CLI then its in Raw mode which moves data in 60 kb increments ....
This article should help you understand where I am going .. and maybe some registry tweaking is in order.....

Also have you pinned the NICs at the appropriate speed and duplex?

Thanks for the responses!
To answer all questions:
Drivers - Yes. I'm using the latest drivers available for each card from Intel and 3com.
Copy & Paste - Yes, GUI. I'm going to Start, Run, \\servername\share and then copying and pasting the files.
File types - The files are ghost images that are closed at the time of copying. Most are about 1GB but a couple are larger. I have about 40 GB of images (production imgs, test images, etc)
NIC - I have not forced any settings in the NIC properties. Everything is default. What do you recommend changing or setting here? Everything here in our office is switched 100.
Thanks!
Local Copy - I can copy the same 1GB image to another HD in the system in about 60-90 seconds.

This is a MAJOR problem in XP Pro for me. I've reduced the probelm on a large scale by running a program called O&O Clever Cache 4.
I can't live without it now. Makes the XP disk cache work :P Should help with Windows 2000 too.
