Give me a Linux box and I can set up a network....windowsXP is a different matter.

Is there a way to give user based access to different directories between XP Home and XP Pro? I know I cannot use domains with home so that option is out.

Use the lusrmgr.msc tool in your peer to peer system!

Start Button, Run command, lusrmgr.msc... & that mmc.exe popup will start & let you add users from other rigs on your LAN, or should, peer to peer or not!

That should allow you to add new users & into valid user groups (even stock ones) that you can assign rights to for!

Then, for filesystem stuff, you use Explorer.exe later in its security & permissions tab from rightclicks on folders & files and the popup menu Properties submenu & the Security tab...

Here, you can browse users & in the advanced section browse a network using the FIND feature.

(IIRC, it uses NetBIOS lanmanager type UNC path names to add users, but shields you from all that madness like //OtherComputerOnYourLanNamedThis/folder stuff...)

* Try that... good luck!

Thanks.

That sounds like pretty much what I am looking for.

On a side note, I keep hearing of these .msc files that I didn't even know existed before coming to this forum. Is there documentation out there for these? XP and Windows in general seems to have very little documentation on anything (With the exception of things how to make a new folder and how to copy files.)

Makes me realize how much I appreciae man pages.

Problem: lusrmgr.msc does not run in WinXP Home. I am connecting a pro to a home system.

Any other solutions?
