Removal of Drag n Drop desktop icons

Anyone know how to remove just the annoying 'Drag n Drop' icons from my desktop on a Sony R505-TSK running Windows 2000? The program lets me burn CDs just fine, but I hate those crazy icons! ;( ;( ;(

perhaps drag and drop them into thr recycle bin
