A monitor that wont work properly

I recently bought a 19Inch monitor....Compaq V90

The res on the monitor are

1280*1024 @ 85Hz
1600*1200@75

But after a re install the monitor would only work in
1280*1024@75Hz.....If i try to go higher the screen only turns black.

does anyone know what to do. and maby if i can fix it

What os / SP are you running. Maybe you running into M$ refresh rate problem. Check out http://www.xp-refresh.net/ There you can also find a bunch of tool to fix that. Did your monitor ever run at 1024*768@85Hz.
