What the hell is going on with them? I had installed ECC 8 months ago after I installed WinXP, ran the update to 5.01d, and the xp patch and it all worked fine on the first try back then.

I just got the 5.1 update and it totally faqd everything up. So I uninstall, clean out every trace from the registry, hdd, etc., and I can't get back to how I was before 5.1. Any ideas?

I use nero, clone CD and others for most things, but ECC had the best gui, and was just easier to use if I had to burn a cd real quick, so I can do without it. I'm just puzzled as to why it's such a pain to get it to work.

If you could be a bit more specific about what exactly you mean "it totally f* everything up", maybe we'll be able to help you.
You mean the program crashes? It doesn't burn properly? It doesn't recognise your CD-RW properly?

I was more ranting that seeking help, but since it may be possible to get help, here goes:

Previously had 5.01d running in WinXP, never a problem. This was a clean install of WinXP. Two days ago, I got the 5.1 patch, because it claimed to fix some gui bugs among other things. After patching, ECC would no longer start up. An error would pop up saying "could not initiate cd engine" or something along those lines.

So, I uninstalled completely, and reinstalled back to 5.01d, and still got the error. Then repeated, this time wiping any ECC registry entries, etc., still to no avail. I am completely unable to use it now, with or without that new "patch."

However, it isn't too big of a deal because I can use Nero, CloneCD, and some other apps to do the same plus more. I only liked ECC for its easy gui.

I probably won't try anything else, unless someone comes up with a very good, convincing fix, because I already wasted a lot of time on this issue. It's just not worth the fight to get crappy software to work.

Good advice, I was able to find 2 more driver files and their corresponding registry entries, but no more than that, after much scouring. Roxio still won't work, but I'm better off now that I'm no longer attached to their warm fuzzy gui. Nero is so much better!
