Can anyone shed some info on this technology? How does it work?

Reporters and journalists are using this during the war with Afghans.. they send video footage news via "videophone". I'm just curious if they are just using vid. cam/internet or something else.

They are typically using a shrunk down solution that is more or less handheld. It's a small video conferencing unit with a screen and a camera. The uplink is made via satellite and then beamed to the news rooms. It's also quite secure so the Taliban can't listen on what's being said.
