My vote is for Homeworld. All I can say is "Simply Beautiful Graphics"

Homeworld doesn't really count since its more an RTS than a Space Sim but since you said "space game" I'm not going to continue being pedantic.

My opinion on this though is that if you've never played Descent/Conflict: FreeSpace The Great War or FreeSpace 2 then you've never played a space game smile

X-Wing (the original, not vs. TieFighter) smile

Or how about Elite, does anyone remember that? A huge hit for the 286 platform laugh

StarLancer is cool. Very pretty to look at and plays quite well as well.

I also thought that Wing Commander Prohpecy was great as well.

hmm I just downloaded the freespace 2 demo, can I play it with just a mouse? Or do I have to have a jotstick or gamepad to move correctly?

You can use a mouse, obviously a joystick is preferable though.

Defender, or better yet, R-Type. Astro-blaster was pretty cool on Atari, it was from a little-known company named Activision...

:p

Well, it's not in space all the time, but Descent 3 is friggin' awesome! Only reason I bought a joystick.

Yep Clutch...you had the 2600 too? Atari ruled...
I was looking at the Commodore 64 like i'm looking at a 4way Hammer now (if there is a 4way config, lol)!

Star Control 2 is clearly the best space game. They need to remake it for Win9x!!! (so all of you who haven't played it can realize what a good game it is)

This is the best space game, *happy campers*, and for all who disagree, it is *dancing*!!! (you'd have to have played it to get that last line)
