Right, hope there are some networking specialists in here, because this one has me perplexed.

At home I have a very small 2 computer network, sharing a cable internet connection.

The Server connects to the net via a NIC connected to a Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem. The second NIC then connects to a 10/100 Dual Speed Hub.

Connected to the hub is my laptop, which I use so I don't always have to sit in front of my PC.

I have the network running quite smoothly, and share the internet connection through ICS.

The server is running the latest version of Zone Alarm Pro.

Now, the problem is that my server also runs as an FTP server while I'm not there. If I have ICS disabled, people are able to connect fine to the FTP, however, if ICS is enabled, connections aren't permitted. At first I thought it was Zone Alarm, but completely disabling it made no difference.

I'd really like to get this working, as I hate annoyances.

The server and Laptop are both running WinXP Pro.
The FTP Server is running under Serv-U FTP v3.0

When you connections aren't permitted, does it "hang" when it suppose to transfer the directory info or does the server not respond at all?

If it "hangs" make sure the clients are configured to use passive mode ftp.

Can you setup port forwarding in ICS? For instance, you might have to setup ICS to forward all port 21 (or whatever port you are hosting you FTP site on) to the local machine that ICS is installed on. You have to do the same thing with systems using Winroute and other NAT/PAT packages.

That's wierd, I got the exact same setup and I have never had any need for configuring port forwarding. But I'm running 2k, maybe they change something in XP.

Just wondering, if the ftp-server is listening on the exernal nic/ip (same as ICS) where to send the packets forward?

The only problem I had with this setup was that my ftp-server would only listen to the internal nic as default, had to force it to listen on the exeternal ip/nic.

Well, having been tinkering with this thing (and having gone back to a previous version of Serv-U 2.5i), I can get someone to connect, but they can't establish a data socket.

Any ideas?

Has that person tried using Passive (PASV) mode on the his/her FTP client?

Yeah, he said his client was already in passive mode.

For some reason, its unable to connect at all now. Must be one of those settings I've been playing with.
