Newbie to laptops: Buying laptop Pentium 1Ghz, 256 Ram, 30GB HD
Laptop to be used for for java programming, lotus smartsuite and for logging onto university network while at work. Two questions:

2. If I instal Win 2K will I have problems logging on to the university network which uses Win 98SE?

At my work all our sales persons use to have 98 on their notebooks, we've pgraded them to 2000 and have had great results. They hook them to all sorts of networks while out in the field, so I would hope you would'nt have any problem.

WIN2K Pro-
1) because it has native ACPI support (NT4 doesn't)
2) because it has native PCMCIA support (NT4 doesn't)
3) because 95/98/ME blows.

As far as networking is concerned I've had some problems with 98/2k networking well together, but it depends on what protocols you'll be using. 98 does not blow, ME does. ME promised improved stability and speed and failed on both of these.

Windows 2000. On a machine like that, please don't put something like Windows 98 on it. That would be like putting lead tires on a mustang. **shivers**

Win2k, definitely...I think it's the best MS-OS around for now,
though I still don't know XP well...
