Which distro are you thinking of using? If you haven't decided, I reccommend either Fedora Core 1 or Mandrake 9.0. Which ever distro you decide to use should find that empty space and install there. It may take more than one time to get it right. Just be patient, double check all your choices, and above all, BACK UP YOUR XP DATA BEFORE STARTING!

Your hardware is new. You might better go with Fedora.

avoid mandrake 9.2... it was my first stab at linux... and it gave me a major pain and somehting like 3 sleepless nights to pull it up and running... also i met problems when installing the plugins for mozilla... and any other browser at that... they just didnt work until u tried like every different way... but ever since then ive loved linux... it may have been a pain, but in a way i learned alot about linux through it cause you meet so many errors that you have to go around and you can learn your way around the konsole, and how some commands work, etc... so through errors you learn wink
