Help
Hello. I just installed linux Mandrake 9.2 and am unable to get it to recognize the internet. I can ping the DSL server successfully, but when I open a browser, it says it can't find any URL I enter. Correct IP address is present in the system configuration.
Does a user need to be given privileges somehow to access the Web? Seems like KDE must be the roadblock. Or am I way off?

If using Konqueror, try Mozilla and see if the same problem occurs. If using Mozilla, try Konqueror. Is your e-mail not connecting to the Internet either?

Neither browser will connect. I keep getting "Cannot find server."
It reminds me of a problem I had once with Windows IE not accessing the Internet because of a quirky ZoneAlarm feature that wasn't apparent, but that of course isn't the case here. Seems like something in KDE won't let a user or even root access the Internet, though as I said, I can ping with no problem.
Hadn't tried email though. I'll reboot to Linux and try. Thanks.

KMail appeared to mail out okay, though it never reached the email address I sent it to. It might be waiting there now though as a returned or unsendable email. (To access this site, I have to reboot to Windows).

When you installed, were you given a chance to configure a firewall? If so, you may want to check into the MDK Control Center to see if the firewall security is too restrictive. How are you connected to the Internet? Directly from a modem or router? Did you try configuring your connection in the Mandrake Control Center?

I tried turning off the firewall, but it makes no difference.
I have DSL, and the set up prompts for a gateway address, which is set properly. Does a host name need to be specified as well? Sprint never sent that, saying the IP address was all that was needed.

Try configuring it again in the Mdk Control center, only this time, do not enter ip or gateway. It's been a while since I used MDK, but tell it to let your ISP provide the ip address and see if it will then connect. If you are going through a router the problem may be there. If from a modem directly, it may be confused and won't let you use it under Linux until you reset it. That can be the case with cable modems anyway.
