I'm just making the final switch from M$ to Linux. Had Mandrake 9.0 in a dual boot with Windows, just toyed with it for a while and it worked fine, then replaced it with Mandrake 9.2. Newer version runs MUCH slower than 9.0 did, and much slower than W98. Takes it ten or more seconds to access the CDROM or the floppy drive. Have 256 MB RAM, and an intact swap partition of 480 MB, though "Top" shows none of it being used. DMA is activated for that drive.

Does anyone have any ideas? There are 70 processes running after boot, but only one active, though I'm too new to this to judge what that means.

Thanks.

This is another example of newer is not always better!

What processor do you have on the system?

Did you do an upgrade install or fresh install of Mandrake 9.2?

Processor is Celeron 1.1 GHz.

It was a fresh install of Mandrake, not an overlay.

Yes, perhaps I should have left well enough alone, but the difference is so marked between Mandrake 9.0 and 9.2 that something important must not be set up properly now. It takes ten or more seconds to open even the most basic applications.

Thanks.
