I have had some trouble with a resident file in winme.

When ctfmon.exe is loaded I coundnt start my dvd player
(dxr3 from creative)

I have used msconfig.exe to disable the file from starting up.

But i dont know what the funktion of the file was...

Anywhone out there who can tell me..

Process File: ctfmon or ctfmon.exe
Process Name: Alternative User Input Services
Description: Handles Alternative User Input Text Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. Ctfmon.exe provides text input support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies

So... if you don't need the other language options of the speech recognition you can run safely without it!
