WinME driver info database problem

In WinME on my dad's system, it works great except when you try to add new hardware. When the "Please wait... updating the driver information database" window pops up it takes like 30 minutes for the blue bar to finish. This isn't mission critical, but it's SUCH a hassle. Anyone have any ideas or should I just reformat and reinstall ME?
