EQ Stop Error

After a fresh install of Win2k +SP2 +Latest Drivers +EQ, Eq starts just dandy. However it pauses a very long time just before displaying characters for selection, and I get a BSOD Stop error when I try to change resolution. A search of the forums turned up a few other people experiencing the same problems but without any fixes. Is there anyone out there that can help?
