I have 2 HDs. On the first HD I have installed windows and on the second linux mandrake (with lilo bootmanager). Now when i want to boot with only my first disk (second disk is not connected to pc) i get error. How can i fix this?

i know i can do fdisk /mbr to restore windows boot. But when my second HD is connected i want to load the bootmanager. summary

1 HDisk -> boot from that disk
2 HDisks -> load bootmanager

thx

Could you give a little more information - what is the error that you are getting?

Did you install lilo on the MBR or on the Linux partition?

When using lilo, does an option for Windows come up as a choice in lilo?

Is there a reason why you are disconnecting the second hard drive? For example, is it an external or internal drive?

Looks like Lilo is set to boot from the second hard drive. So, when it looks for the drive and it is not there, you get the error.

Lilo probably should have been installed on the first hard drive, where the master boot record is. I assume the first drive is set up as master and the second as slave?

Look at Lilo.conf and see if the boot device is set for hdb rather than hda. If it is, this is the problem.
