Is there a way of getting rid of the System Desktop Icons off my desktop ??
I mean the 'My Computer', 'My Network Places' and the 'Recycle Bin' ones.
I just want NOTHING on my desktop and to access these from the taskbar launchers.
Thanks.

Right-click on the desktop, and choose Active Desktop -> Show Web Content. Then right-click again, and uncheck Active Desktop -> Show Desktop Icons.

If you don't like Vipers solution (which works OK,) use TweakUi or use x-setup (both freeeware)

In registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
create a new DWORD key named NoDesktop and set its value to 1
That way you will loose the whole desktop
