any way to get ata 100 suport in w2k ?

Recommended Posts

Alternatively, call MS, and ask for the file quoting the knowledgebase number.

They will send you an email with a download location for the file, and the password so you can unzip it.

If you do it this way you know you're getting the official file and not something that may have a nasty surprise in it.

Hmmm....it is very tempting to download that file from Devil_DK's link but I also agree with Bursar. I don't like "surprises." I don't know if Devil is trustyworthy...look at his name, got the word "Devil." heheh..

You don't need the file. Simply install the drivers for your IDE controllers and you'll be set.

I have an Intel D815EEA motherboard that has onboard ATA100. It came with a CD with ver 6.0 of Intel's ATA100 drivers, and they install ok. BUT! I had gotten a message from someone on the newsgroups that said these are not any better than the regular ATA66 drivers. He suggested, and sent me the WSP2 hotfix for this. I tried it and it installed. But without a benchmark, I can not really say if there is any difference, so I went back to the Intel drivers.

ALSO of note - the WSP2 Hotfix for the ATA100 has a slight bug in it. Supposedly, even though you ARE running at DMA ATA100, it will show up at PIO mode.

But, seeing as I also have an Adaptec 2940US and a 10K RPM WD SCSI2 disk, I think I might use GHOST to reimage it with my WIN2K partition and see if that will make things any snappier.

I am not sure that anyone would really be able to tell the difference between ATA 100 and 66 as the drives rarely if ever put out more than 66 megs in a second. So the only performance increase that you are likely to see is in the burst transfers from the physical cache on the hard disk itself. I haven't seen anymore than 2megs of ram on an ide disk so at a 100 meg per second transfer rate the 2 megs of disk cache would be transferred in .02 seconds instead of .03 seconds on ata 66. As you can see until we start to see IDE drives with a spindle speed of like 10 or 15 k this ATA 100 is really only a negligible performance difference at best and I think that it is really just another marketing ploy.

From PIO to DMA? YES

From DMA/33 to DMA/100? Not as much as PIO to DMA but every little bit counts.
