SCALE 13x Update for Feb. 1:

SECOND KEYNOTER SET: Monty Taylor of OpenStack has been named the

second keynote speaker at SCALE 13x, joining Ruth Suehle as the two

top speakers at this year's expo. Taylor will speak on "Lemmings,

Think Different and Why Free Software is Still Important." Join Monty

for his keynote on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. in a discussion of

some of the more popular false one-liners, how they're affecting the

tech industry and what you can do about it.

Ruth Suehle will be giving the keynote on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m.

about “Makers: The Next Frontier for Open Source.†While the maker

movement seems open source by nature, the reality is quite different,

with many makers being unfamiliar with open source principles. But the

crossover between makers and open source is a natural fit, and the

outlook is hopeful as groups like the Open Prosthetics Project and the

Arduino and Raspberry Pi systems point to an open-source direction to

which the maker movement can advance.

ALLY SKILLS WORKSHOP: Do you think diversity in the Free/Open Source

Software community is important, but aren't sure what you can do to

help? Would you like to learn simply, everyday ways to change the

culture to be more welcoming to everyone, especially women, newcomers,

and marginalized people? Then you should sign up now for the Ally

Skills Workshop on Friday, Feb. 20 at SCALE 13x. This is a fun,

interactive, and fast-paced workshop led by the Ada Initiative that

teaches men how to support women in FOSS communities in simple,

everyday ways. This workshop usually costs several hundred dollars a

person but is free to SCALE attendees with a full-access pass, thanks

to a generous donation from an anonymous Linux kernel developer.

People of all genders are welcome and encouraged to attend, but you

must sign-up in advance to reserve your seat. For more information,

The Southern California Linux Expo SCALE 13x will be held from Feb.
