  1. I am about to reinstall win2000 but I am faced with a problem. I dont really want to format / re partition the drive and if I just reinstall over, my program files directory and winnt directory will still be full of junk that I want to get rid of. Since my partition is NTFS, I cant figure out how to delete these directories and then reinstall the operating system. Anyone have any ideas?
  2. Well, ive been having this encounter for quite awhile now and it has really started to bother me. The problem is, every day at 5:43pm and 5:43am, my hard disk turns off and then turns on again. I think this is around the time I originally installed windows2000, and am wondering why it is doing this. It has been doing this for windows2000 proffesional and windows2000 server for quite awhile, and even after reinstallation of my OS it still does it. I dont see how this is a feature or something that is supposed to happen, but is it normal? Is there a way to disable it? Sometimes im burning a cd around 5:43, hard disk turns off..coaster. I could also see some other bad situations, and cant see how my hard disk turning itself off is good at all. Any feedback is appreciated.
  3. I think we have a mis-understanding My computer does not reboot itself, my hard-disk turns itself off and then on again. If im burning a cd, I get a buffer-under run, data stops coming to my computer for a second etc. And yes, im running diskeeper , but diskeeper 6.0 server and it is scheduled to start and stop defraging at different times than the 5:43 range.

    Geforce TV-Out - Any Good?

TV out quality greatly depends on cable and type of connection you use. Most geforce cards have the ability to output svideo directly, if you use that and your tv has a svideo connection, your image will have superior quality. Svideo is a lot better than composite.

Advice on dual slot 1 mobo please

I would recomend the gigabyte 6bxd. This board is decently priced and ive been using one since december 99. This is a dual slot 1 board, 5pci, 2isa, 4 ram slots, agp2x, ata33 .. the board itself is fairly basic I guess, but at the price its very good and I have not had any problems with it so far at all. It is very stable. There are bios updates so it can take p3-800, p3-850 and for acpi win2000 compatability and I have run the system with a geforce 2 GTS without any problems.

New System time.. AMD or INTEL?

Intel probably has the best reliability / stability under win2000, however if you build a decent tbird box with a good motherboard, keep drivers updated and generally know what your doing, a tbird box is going to be stable as well. Tbird's are pretty much on par with P3 performance, but are a bit cheaper.. if your having to buy a new motherboard, case, power supply and all of that, you could weigh up costs and see which system costs more.. either one will be sufficiant I believe when setup properly. As far as lastability, both chips and motherboards will be replaced with next generation stuff, buying a machine now will not be very upgradable within some months down the track.

    A very odd problem

Well, I dont remember when it started happening.. but every 24 hours, on the 24 hour, 1 day uptime, my windows 2000 start bar dissapears, and then comes back.. as if explorer has crashed..I have no icons and other stuff like that, and it is generally very irritating. The wierd thing is , is that I reinstalled win2000 and its still doing it..I dont get it, I really..really dont get it I have not had any problems with anything before, only addition to my system was a second ethernet card for my adsl modem, however I took out one of my two cards and just have one in there now..so there shouldnt be a problem. The only difference I can see in system configuration is the fact that my computer is now manually assigning irq's instead of whacking them all on wierd numbers (no more devices on irq128 etc). Anyone have any idea what could be the problem? Im nearly out of ideas, could possibly try changing video drivers or something, I dont see how its related though My system specs / drivers are as follows: Gigabyte 6BXD (latest official bios) 448mb pc100 Dual P3-800 Soundblaster Live! (liveware 3.0) Geforce 2 GTS (detonator 6.18) Pioneer 6x dvdrom (latest firmware) Teac CDR55-s (latest firmware) few hdd's and other stuff, but they dont really matter.. Any ideas anyone? Any help appreciated.

    Reinstalling Windows 2000?

Ahh, the problem is that it is a VERY large partition. I guess it would be possible to back everything up but am looking for another solution. It would be a lot easier if I could somehow remove /winnt and /program files before I get into the setup program, while the rest of the drive is there..I guess I can just install over, but there will probably be junk left over everywhere..ah. Wonder if theres any dodgey programs to let win98 read ntfs5

Bet you never knew: 31MB video card

Odd..very odd, at first I thought it may have been a typo but if you add up.. 15MB 3DRAM (frame & local buffer) 16MB CDRAM(texture)GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE 3Dvectors, 3.3M per second 3Dtriangles, 3.3M per second Texture fill rate 70M pixels/sec you get 31...very strange indeed

    Geforce MX and Windows 2000

Try formatting and reinstalling your operating system. Theres probably some old stuff left behind which could be degrading performance. I know a couple of people with mx's and win2000 without any problems, so it looks like its something on your end.

    Celery 2 rocks!

AMD K6-2's and alike are under celeron performance.

    Celery 2 rocks!

Actually, the difference is quite a bit higher than 1, 2, 3%. In ZD WinBench 99 CPUmark the 700mhz duron is about 25% faster than the 700mhz celeron. Also in other things they are ranging from 10-30% faster. So, it seems that durons are 10-30% faster than celerons in everything. Not to mention their a cheaper chip, and also overclock as well as celerons if thats your liking. So duron is better. [This message has been edited by wind (edited 19 October 2000).]

    Celery 2 rocks!

Anyone that thinks celeron 2 is faster than duron is just plain wrong. Instead of just giving my opinion, ill just give you some factual information / benchmarks so you can stfu and get over it. http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/reviews/cpu/duron_750/5.shtml and onwards, duron clearly winning in each situation, for games(check page 9, can you say+20fps for the same speed duron?), office applications and whatever. Or how about.. http://www.planethardware.com/features/cpu/Celeron700/index5.shtml onwards, duron clearly winning there too.. You could argue that celerons overclock a lot, but even a overclocked celeron, a even mhz duron prolly isnt far off at the original clock of the celeron .. but then you could just overclock the duron too, which people have been doing very successfully.. such as: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/articles/duron_vs_celeron_oc/ so overclocked durons are even faster..wow So, the bottom line is, if your celeron is outperforming your athlon, or your duron, or your p3, or whatever, then somethings BROKEN, mis-configured, not working properly or just plain wrong. Those are the facts, have a nice day. [This message has been edited by wind (edited 19 October 2000).]

    Gravis Gamepads + Win2000?

Recently I saw some new driver for gravis gamepads under win2000 to download. Unlike the previous drivers, these were a final release so I downloaded them thinking that they wouldnt have the problems of the beta (eg that wierd bsod concerning ntgrip.sys). Anyway, the gamepad worked ok for about 6 days uptime and then when I was in the middle of doing some machine-strenous activity I got a bsod concerning the ntgrip.sys..sigh Has anyone had the same problems or different results? Or even a solution? Might mail gravis and tell them about it, maybe they're unsure of this error or something.

    Gravis Gamepads + Win2000?

I think the drivers are for all the gravis gamepads, they're like a referance driver or something. The time when my machine crashed due to ntgrip.sys when I was in the middle of hex editing a 730mb file. This is a bit strange, which makes me to think it could have been a random crash to do with the gamepad or something, however it did happen after quite a long uptime so hmm, maybe it was to do with that. Shrug

how do i activate 4X AGP?

I dont think your motherboard supports 4x agp for starters, and second, your not missing out on much..4x agp over 2x agp is benchmarked to be something like 2% faster, no big deal.

Winddows NT 4.0 vs Windows 2000: Why Should I Upgrade?

Yeah, win2000 will run under 128mb ram, probably fine too...it depends on what you do on your computer though, once it goes past 128mb physical usage you get into swapfile zone I normally sit at 180mb idle and have 320mb total system ram, so if I start using a program that wants lots of ram there isnt really any speed decrease etc.

Winddows NT 4.0 vs Windows 2000: Why Should I Upgrade?

Windows 2000 has good: usb support, pnp support, directx / new hardware support and overall win32 program support (mainly including lots and lots of games that dont run in nt4). Also, the nt4 interface looks very old and outdated where as win2000 looks very nice and sleek One thing to keep in mind is that win2000 likes lots of ram, I wouldnt recomend running it under 192.

    Need Opinions on CD Drive

What you really want is the Kenwood True 72X cdrom drive. Unlike other cdrom drives that have a stupidly high speed, this drive has multiple beams so it actually reads at 72x and isnt stupidly noisy. This is the fastest cdrom drive available, not to mention that its a quality drive and doesnt sound like a 747 on takeoff http://www.kenwoodtech.com/72x.html

what power supply 250 or 300

More power the merrier I got a 350watt in my machine, was going to go for the 400 but the price:watt ratio wasnt good enough for a purchase (add the fact that I probably dont go over 250-300).

    Quick Recomendation please

SCSI is quite a bit better than IDE actually. Ata100 doesnt really compare, as its not actually much better than ata-33 anyway. SCSI hard drives normally run at 4.5ms or 5ms, while the best ide drives run at 8.5ms. SCSI hard drives also run at 10000/15000rpm, so having those would be quite a bit faster than 7200rpm ide drives available. The deal seems pretty good, while the scsi card is fairly top range, probably third best as the 2940u2w and 29130(I think thats it) is probably a little better. The drive is also decent but there is better - seagate hold the crown for the best scsi drives with the cheetah series.

    CPU question

Older amd motherboards and stuff were having some interesting problems but with new chipsets and extremely improved drivers, I believe athlons/tbirds are pretty stable. However, the via chipset doesnt transfer memory too fast on the P3 via boards, and I think the amd ones suffer that problem also. If there are incompatability problems, they are normally addressed or fixed up eventually so basically theres no real advantage or disadvantage of each CPU. What you will want to take into consideration is that the amd cpu's will cost quite a bit less, but you may need to buy a new 300watt power supply, therefore the price difference being slim to none. If you need to buy a new motherboard and cpu, I would probably reccomend getting an AMD cpu with a GOOD tbird socket a motherboard, such as the abit kt7 raid, unless you need to buy a new power supply. However, see how much the p3-800 and the asus cusl2(i815e board) costs, and if that is about the same or less than amd/board/powersupply, I would go for that instead.

    DUAL CPU QUESTION !!!!!

Theres some intel compatability list somewhere and it says some of their p3's are NOT smp capable.

    DUAL CPU QUESTION !!!!!

Well, all you have to do is think about it logically and you cant really go wrong.. CPU's are multiplyer locked (well, lets hope the ones that your planning on using are). It doesnt matter what you set your system multiplyers to, it will have to run at whatever the cpu says. Then theres bus speed which you have to set. Just as long as the CPU's are both happy with the bus speed you set then you should be fine, in theory. I have a p3-800 (8x100) and a p3-500 (5x100) in the same system - the key being that they both share the same bus speed.

Looking for a Win2k Friendly GamePad

The thing that I found with microsoft gamepads is that generally they feel really..light/cheap. They really arent up to the quality level of any decent gamepad, such as a console gamepad and a few of gravis's to an extent. Im using a playstation 2 gamepad under win2000 at the moment, no complaints yet, nice feel, lots of buttons and soforth.
