Power supply is possibly bad, I would check by putting another one *preferably new or known working) in it. does your friend have an extra, or maybe even can bring his own over and check? Sounds like it may be the issue however. Common IRQ ect.. probs can occur for Bad/Failing power supplies, also ones with no enough juice to power your rig. Driver conflicts, as well as ovewrheating, check your fans, make sure all are clean, replace any that seem slower than normal. Uninstall/Reinstall any drivers such as Sound and Video. Also, check your BIOS if possible (if not check windows system) and look at the IRQ's and look at which are shared. you will want your Video Card to be on an IRQ alone, normally IRQ 11. I have 3Mbit Broadband (Cable) I setup my NIC on local static ip instead of dynamic. Net seems to work ok, 320-400KB/s downloads, Mirrors seem to download fine. The problem does not occur during the "download" phase of up[censored], it happens while the packages are being installed. And I think I may have found the problem, well sorta. Seems if I select a ton of updates at one time, it will sometimes freeze at random and end up corrupting my install. However, if I select maybe a few packages such as 5 at a time, it works fine and have not gotten a freeze up. I am open for suggestions on why this would be? Until I have that figured out I am going to remain using Xandros and kep Mandriva on another system for testing, need to reolve it as it happens on different systems, Even tried with no Firewalls. Tried DMZ mode on my Router, same issue though, but could be possible the Router may have anything to do with it even in DMZ mode? np, if the problem does disappear after disabling USB in the BIOS, then I would grab the updates for your distro and possibly consider compiling the latest Kernel Source and customize it to your system as it may give some better performance as well as stability and may resolve other misc issues with the USB. Sounds like a video issue, can be many reasons to get this, overheating, faulty/failing video card, driver conflict, weak power supply I would start by uninstalling your old video drivers, and try a different version. Maybe even newer version if you have not updated them recently. Or older if you have recently upgraded them. Scan your system for Spyware, also check that you have nothing running in the background that can possibly be conflicting, I would recommend a easy online scan http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp?id=scan (Choose Complete Scan) If you have not installed any Chipset Drivers for your board, such as VIA, SiS, nForce, ect.. I would recommened doing so as that may also clear up any problems. You can always search google by typing the name of the chipset and find and download the drivers to match yours. If the above does not resolve the issue, try this next, Reboot and go into the BIOS, find in the BIOS anything relating to Video (such as Fast Writes, AGP Speed, Video Cache, Video Shadow, AGP Aperature. ect..) For Video Ram Cache and Video Shadow, I would disable them, most modern video cards do not need this option and can cause conflicts since they have their own built in cachine and shadow features. Mostly older cards such as Trident 9xxx cards and such use this option. And mainly older PCI models, AGP should really not need it. Quick Question: Do you have an nVidia AGP Video Card? If so, look for Fast Writes and change the setting for it, (usually only 2 options, Enabled/Disabled, simply change it to the opposite. Also, if you have am item called "AGP Driving Strength, change it to Manual and set it for FF (this is the strongest setting and will provide more priority to the card) If this works, it could mean you need to replace your Power Supply, as it may not be providing enough power to all devices, if you have recently ugraded to a higher end card, you may need more power to supply it. While some will say 400-450 is sufficient for most systems, its better to have a little too much than not enough as not enough will cause hardware to work harder and overheat. Just dont go overboard if this is what your needing, you wont need something like a 600-700 watt! 500-550 will be fine! Ok, after you first have tried the BIOS settings, also check AGP Aperature Size, what is it set for? Have you tried setting it to 128 or 64? What is the support on your board for AGP Speed? 2x, 4x, 8x ? Or is this a PCI Express system? Or just a plain PCI system, if you can provide more detail as to your hardware and such, it will enable me to help you further. Also, if you have recently bought a new video card, such as a new AGP nVidia FX Series, most of which will have a power plug to plug in the power (same cables that power your hard drives and cd-roms) Make sure you have plugged one in!! That can definately be a problem if the system is not able to power it properly. (Its common to forget to do the simple things, so please take no offense, I mean nothing bad by asking this question, as everyone can make simple mistakes, its part of life) One last thing, if you have a AGP 4x card and your BIOS/Board supports AGP 8x, be sure that 8x is not set and set it to 4x, normally it will still only run as fast as the card supports, but in some cases, it may not detect that its 4x and may need to set it to 4 in order for it to work properly. On a side note, I have seen many 8x AGP Video cards that are placed in boards only running at max 4x that seem to have a conflict, if that is the case, you would need a card to match your board (4x) or a new board to match the card (8x)

I would start by booting into safe mode, since your able to, Goto the Control Panel, and user accounts then create a new User, such as Test or any name you like, Now, browse the HDD to the desktop and my documents of the "old" username (whatever your old profile was) Copy everything in My Documents, Favorites, and Desktop to a folder somewhere else in order to keep a backup if you have any files in those locations you want to keep. Now, in the Users screen, delete the "Old Profile" and then reboot. It should boot normally, and boot into the new account you created. I have seen this same problem on machines of my own as well as others I have worked on, seems to be a problem with the account profile becoming corrupt, usually can happen when the PC was not properly shutdown, or even events where the data for the account dyring shutdown were not written to the hard disk completely before the system powered off or restarted. As stated, it may mostly likely be the problem here and making a new user account on the system and deleting the old should resolve it. If that does not work, then reboot into safe mode again, and uninstall and remove and drivers that you have installed (Such as modem, video card ,sound drivers, Next, after you uninstall the drivers, Go into My Computer > System and look at the hardware tab, check for any items that are being shown "duplicate", some of which may be shown with a yellow exclamation point. Any items shown 2 times or more, remove them all even ones that are not having the yellow exclamation, Windows can redect them upon a successful boot. If all goes well, you should boot back into windows properly, note, you will have to reinstall all drivers for any hardware, chipsets ect.. that windows does not setup automatically, and some of course such as video you may want to install manufactueres drivers anyhow to get optimal performace, such as Sound and Video. // Regards, dllfile

I would do as Relic suggested for now, however, if you are wanting to use Win2K with SP4, your best bet would be to make a SlipStream CD that already contains SP4 integrated, backup anything you want/need to keep and reinstall fresh using the SlipStream CD. Here is a good source to show you how to acomplish this. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=295 some reason the Service Packs when you install them as an "Update" do not always work "stable" alot of peeps complain about how MS Windows is not reliable or not stable, ect.., but in fact if you do the slipstream method they can be very stable/reliable, and as secure as you make it of course 0o Same goes for the SP2 for XP, Update from MS update sometimes will be all weird acting, but using a Slipstream XP with SP2 is actualy as smooth and stable as Win2k.

For the graphics problem, I would go with picking the generic monitor and graphics driver, you can click test to make sure it work, all you need is for it to work long enough to get the OS installed. Once installed, you can always install and reconfig the graphics. For the other problem, try disabling USB in the BIOS of your motherboard and unplug any USB devices you have, until after you get the OS installed and are able to run update to get bug fixes ect.. Also be sure to get bug fixes and such before installing any graphics drivers, along with grabbing the new kernel and source to go along with it. Do you have a PS2 Keyboard and Mouse handy? (In case your using USB versions) you may want to try disabling USB in the BIOS and see if the problem still exists. (be sure to unplug any USB devices you have plugged in as well) If it clears up after disabling USB, then there is the problem. I have experienced this problem as well on a ABit board. Seems to happen more so in Mandriva 2005 LE and Xandros 3.0 Deluxe If it clears up after doing the above, I would take that time to add some update resources and be sure to grab updates/bug fixes as there may be a bug fix that will solve the problem once USB is enabled again. ok, well I took a chance again and decided to close the package installer and reboot the system. Everything went ok, and have gotten the updates installed. Still would like to know if anyone else experiences this prob and if their is some reason why it would do that and if so, any way to avoid it in the future?

Hello all, I am very new to Linux, I am currently having an issue with Mandriva 2005 LE (DVD) I have gotten the OS installed np, everything seems to work ok, cept the Package Updater, when I am installing packages, it downloads them, starts installing the selected updates/fixes ect.. Then after a few minutes it will just sit there, the progress bar window is open, but nothing else happening. As if it is not reponding. I had this happen earlier today so I closed the window and tried to run again, but would not run, so I rebooted the OS, ended up messing up the install of Linux and had to reinstall fresh. Now I am at this point again and am afraid to close it Anyone know how to resolve this issue? Or know if I can safely shutdown the update process and restart it? Everything else is running still, so the system is not completly frozen, just the package install process. I am playing Frozen Bubble in the meantime 0o System: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 768MB DDR PC-2100 nVidia Geforce MX 440 64MB 40GB Maxtor SB Live! 5.1 DVD-RW (using from my other system to install the DVD version then switching back to CD-Rom once I get things sorted.) I have other hard drives for the system, but I have not connected them yet till I get the OS running and stable (no ide or power connected to others) Oh, and anyone know where I can get some drivers that are easily installed for Mandriva 2005 for SB Live! 5.1? You can get by with just putting the root files and the folder for the xp drivers, you dont really need to copy the win9x or other folders that do not go with your os your installing on.
