    Untitled thread

hi i've re-read your first line (I've got a problem that my floppy is recognized as read-only, even though the 'puter formatted it (DOS). ) and i'm assuming it is the disk that seems to be read-only. if you have formatted the disk in DOS you can't just drag and drop to copy Linux files to a different filesystem. try starting a terminal and use the "m" tools. for example move yourself to a directory with a file you want to copy to the floppy and type in mcopy filename a: you can also use this to copy files from DOS-formatted disks hope this is what you were referring to.. richo

cd playing problems in red hat 8.0

i've just installed RH9 on two machines and this happened to me on one machine. i used the sound card detector and the card was working fine.. tried a different cd, it malfunctioned.. went back to the first cd.. worked fine from then on. good luck richo
  5. hi just playing around with a small linux network but i'm having trouble exporting nfs from the server.. ( a message about RPC not registered) in red hat 8 i could use the security dialog box to specify 'other ports' (111.369.2049) to allow nfs to be exported. unfortunately the firewall dialog box in RH9 doesn't have an 'other ports' input box and i'm not able to work out how to specify those necessary ports thanks i a richo
  6. hi I'm trying to set up a small network exporting nfs (/home on the server). When I did this on RH8 there was a box for 'Other Ports" at the bottom of the Firewall gui. There isn't on on my RH9 (despite the SAMS book showing it clearly) Am I missing something obvious?? tia richo

    looking for logo

with help from this very site i have managed to get a simple net running and now i'm looking for a linux version of logo (should such a thing exist) currently using MSW logo quite happily but a linux version would give more reason to keep plugging on our net tia richo

mount host on other net machines

    worked a treat... thanks richo
  9. hi apologies for the quality of the question currently putting together a linux network (rh8) on old p1mmx 66Mb machines i am trying to use nfs to make shared folders available to rest of netwk. we have managed to create shared folder and mount it. however i am trying to mount that shared folder as /home on a second machine and have added to the fstab file on that second machine a line of 10.1.1.1:/home /home ngf defaults 0 3 as i reboot that machine i see an error message during the boot that says something like ...no final newline fstab.. and the machine goes on to say the mount could not take place because mount pt not found. tia graeme r

    linux 8 firewall

this too was my problem another underprepared and ill-informed user (me that is) i was going nuts trying to change the firewall settings and i couldn't get anywhere.. i can see the changes in the iptables file so thanks a heap i work in a secondary school and got hold of an old hub and about 8 200mmx machines. the plan is to use rh8 as is making use of the more easily configurable desktop ans then use a lighter windows manager and file manager but that Security Level configuration Screen had me beat thanks again richo
