    X problem

i just upgraded my linux machine from suse 9.1 to 9.3 last night. for some reason now when im logged into like window maker, gnome, or kde after and hour or sometimes less the gui freezes. i can still log in through ssh using putty or from my other linux mahcine i have here. i can work in putty or through console on other linux machine but the gui on the local machine is frozzen and the only way is to restart the whole machine becuase everything is locked up. but the strange thing is is that everything is locked up but i can move the mouse but when i click on stuff nothing happens cause everything is frozzen up. what are some cause that could be causing this. is it video drivers, X its self. what could it be?

    X problem

yes you are absolutly correct danleff i should have read more on the website about it but there was a howto especially for suse users which i didn't pay attension to. i read it and followed the howto and recomplied the drivers and now its working 100%. i should pay more attentsion to that info is on website about stuff like this. what i actually did was online on the nvidia website and just downloaded the driver and installed them using sh Nvidia_blah_blah.mun and didn't use the Yast online update to apply the patch for the drivers like the howto said. thanks for the advice. X problem

hey everyone thanks for the suggestions you gave me but i have found out the solution to the problem. for some odd reason the nvidia drivers that are on the nvidia site are old and not supported by suse 9.3. this is what i did i went into the XFConfig file and changed the Driver from "nvidia" over just to "nv" after i did and restarted the X server i had no more freez ups. which brought me to the concludsion that nvida needs to update thier driver to support the new versions of distros that are out there. again thanks everyone for the help

Mandrake Linux 10.1 Com install problem

then this sounds like you have bad cds. if you are getting these errors and freeze ups then either the iso's that you donwload have missing packages that are supposed to be there or there were errors when you burned the cds. if you can remember what were some of the error messeages that you got in the text install? ifyou can post them in here then we will be able to tell you what is going on. installing a linux os with missing packages and isntall errors is going to lead you to much more problems when you are done with the install.

    No GUI

since you are not getting no gui. make sure that the X server is running. if the X server is running then you need to check and see what type of video card you have and you have to get the drivers for that video card from the manufactures website. give us the specs of your computer we will be able to help you out a little bit more. after you get the drivers for you video card you have to edit your XF86Config-4 files in /etc/X11 directory. i used to have this problem with my 32mb nvidia card and i would have to donwload the drivers and edit the config file and then restart the x server buy first shutting it down using init 3 and then starting it up by using init 5. that should help you out if not let us know and we can think of another alternitive.

    call of duty help

hey dan i tried to eject the cd and it ejected but now it will not read from cd2 it just keeps asking for it. i tired copying the files from both cds to the hard drive since i do have the hard drive space and that didn't work either it still kept asking for cd 2. then i installed it on my windows machine and logged in through samba and copyied all the files from my windows machine to my linux box where the transgamming folder is and i made sure everything was in the right place and that didn't work. i got "could not find default.cfg Make sure call of duty is run from the correct folder" so im out of ideas now. do you have any more maybe??? that would be great. oh by the way im my system is suse 9.1 professional. i use nothing but window maker and everything is executed through console. its a 2.8ghz machine with 1gig of ram....if you would like to look at the specs of my machine you can simply go to http://www.matrix3000k.org/phpsysinfo thanks again for the help Dan Mario ..:The Linux Guru:..

The Linux Learning Curve in my opinion can be discribed as an icy one. P.S. you can run a great many *nix apps in OSX due to the recent integration of X11. good luck you know it really upsets me when people like this person here bashes an operating system when they haven't given it any chance at all. sounds like to me that this person is a microsoft lover. linux does not suck at all. its has many features that windows will never accomplish in my opinion. i have been using linux for the past i would say 3 years now and ever time i use it i love it even more. i have made all my systems at home excpet for on all linux machines. there is only once machine and is windows based and that is becuase i play my games on that computer. all my other workstations are linux based. they range from suse, debian, and xandros <-----(this is a test machine). linux has a huge history and has come a long way. lets see here the huge computer giant IBM just trashed microsoft and have implamented linux into their company. now for a company like IBM to take microsoft out and bring in linux well i think that just says alot right there. but here is the great thing about linux that i do like. you have people out there put in their own time to write software for this os and they are offering it to us for free. now thats cool. im no programmer or anything but i just think thats a great tool to have. soo........ BugLamp i say this to you. if you don't like linux then don't. go back to microsoft. even better since you don't like linux why are you on a linux website posting stuff??? thats all i have to say for now. P.S. to Dapper Dan, and danleff you guys are doing an excellent job as moderators on the forum...keep up the good work guyss "The Linux Guru"

    connecting to a windows network

what distro are you using first of all??? in my opinion i would use samba in console to transfer my files from windows to linux....here is a little how to on how i do it. make sure you have samba installed and in console type in smbclient //computername/share -I <ip address of windows box> -U <login account for windwos> -- for example: smbclient //cypher/C -I 192.168.1.102 -U administrator -- the hit enter -- when you hit enter it should ask you for your windows password. -- put your password in and you will be logged into your windows machine. -- once logged in type in prompt and then you will come back to a terminal. at that type in recurse. now what that dose is when you put in prompt it will turn off the prompting when coping the files over. since you have 9,5 gigs of music and if you don't turn prompting off it will prompt you and ask you if you are sure you want to copy this file over. and recurse will turn on recursive copying over. -- once you put those two commands in you then put the command in mget "name of folder where your mp3s are located" make sure you include the quotes when you put the path in and thats it also when you are logged into your windows machine if you wanna see what directories are there just use the linux commands ls, cd, and so on you might have to cd into the directory where your music folder is located don't forget to do that ok hope this helps you Mario The Linux Guru

    Linksys WPC54G and Mandrake Linux

hey guys remember you are not paying for drivers but you are paying to help support the developers who made that software for us. now i know that linux is all open source and should all be free but these programers out there are working hard for us to write programs that will work for our probelms that we encounter in linux. and it would be nice to give back to them something to thank them for developing and taking the time to develop software. put it this way you are actually paying for something that WILL WORK. unlike microsoft where you pay hundreds of dollars where nothing will ever work. so help these guys out by make a small donation and showing them that you are thankful for their hard work and efforts. ..:Mario:.. about the driverloader i had the same problem it turned out that i downloaded the wrong version for my kernel. doubble check and make sure that you downloaded the write kernel version of driverloader from linuxant. i am using their software as well i and it works great. like i said if you downloaded the wrong kernel version it will NOT work. check on that install the right kernel version and the drivers should load successfully. i also checked your ifcfg file everything seems to correct in that file. let me know what happens. ..:Mario:.. Linksys WPC54G and Mandrake Linux

hey guys i know the problem you are having. it turns out that the linksys WPC54G card has the broadcom chipset. sad enough broadcom will not support linux for some reason. i have a dell internal wireless card that is also made by broadcom. now there are two things you can do.... 1. you can return the wireless card that you and look for a linksys card WPC11 version 1,2 or 3. DO NOT get version 4. version 4 is also made by broadcom. if you choose to do this then you will have to search for drivers for linux called prisim since prisim is the chipset in those cards. i know they are out there on the net as well sorry i don't have a link handy for you. 2. you can do what i did. now i don't use mandrake anymore im a suse user but thats besides the point. i went to http://www.linuxant.com and download driverloader from them for 19.99 which i think is a very very fare price. and with that i loaded up the windows binary drivers with linuxant driverloader and i had my wireless card up and running in the matter of 10 mins. but becareful, you have to download the right version of driverloader for your kernel. if you are unsure what kernel you are using you can simply execute the command in console (uname -r). that will give you the kernel that is installed on your system. if you download any other version of driverloader that is not made for your kernel you will run into many problems trying to load up the drivers. now they have a trial for it as well if you wanna try it out and see if it will work out for you. that is what i did and i liked it and that is why i decided to buy it for 20 bucks.. you can't go wrong with a price like that. you can also check this website http://www.seattlewireless.net/ for other cards that are supported in linux using source drivers. hope this will help you!!! ..:Mario:.. nvidia drivers for FC2?

the drivers should be on the nvidia website as AI32 drivers download them and use the command sh NVIDIA.BLAH.BLAH.bin remember you must be root when you do this and you also must kill the X server to do this as well. to kill the X server the command for that is init 3. that should help ya out. and if that dose not work then i don't know what else to tell you.
  22. hey everyone i recently upgraded from 9.2 to 10.0 on mandrake. well since i upgraded i had a little bit of a probelm with my samba shares on my linux box. ok i have a members only area on my website which is password protected. so when you login to the members area you can see all the servers that i am shareing which are on my windows box and all but when you go to click on a file you get download 0bytes in 1 sec. now i know there is no way in hell a 500 meg file would download that fast yet!!!! lol but anyways i checked my httpd2.conf file and everything seems normal. i then reformated the box and did a fresh install of mandrake 10.0 and im still having the same problem. can someone pleasae help me out : this is the command i used to get my shares mounted in my /var/www/html dir mount -t smbfs -o username=xxxx, password=xxxx //ipaddress/share /blah/blah/blah/blah if i view the share from like konqurer or nautilus everything works fine...its just through the web i can not get it to work....any advise or help would really be great thanks!!!! ..:Mario:..

WIN 2000 PRO RESTARTS AFTER STARTUP

have you tried doing a fix by putting in the windows 2000 cd and booting up like you were going to install it again but instead of installing it again you just hit R on your keyboard and do a repair. that might help if not then you have find out what files are missing and then install them from the cd or make it eaiser and less stressful for yourself and reformat the sucker. hope this helps ..::Mario::..
